EVENT INFORMATION

The 2008 Busselton Half Ironman Triathlon will be held on Saturday 3rd May 2008.

REGISTRATION

  • All participants must register on Friday 2 May between 4.00 pm and 8.45pm only, at the Registration and Expo area on Barnard Park.
  • The registration marquee will be located in the Registration and Expo Area . Car parking is available on Barnard Park and is accessible from Milne Street.
  • On presentation of your TWA membership card or other personal ID you will receive a Race Pack containing your race bib and bike number, your timing band and a Numbered Identification wrist band. Your wristband is your ID throughout the event including when you:   
    • Conduct your Bike Check in on Friday 2 May at transition.
    • Enter transition area on Race Day.
    • Collect your bike and clothes post race.
  • Lost timing bands will incur a fee of $50
  • Any participants with genuine difficulties in registering on Friday night are asked to contact TWA to make alternative arrangements.

BIKE CHECK IN

  • Will take place at transition during registration times 4.00pm to 9.00pm
  • Once registered, you are required to check your bike into transition for the race. A Bike Number will be supplied in your race pack, this must be attached to your seat pillar with the numbers showing behind the pillar prior to bike check in. You are not permitted to register on Friday evening and check your bike in on Saturday morning prior to the race.
  • Technical Officials will carry out a cursory inspection of your bike. You should ensure your bike is in safe working order before presenting it at check-in to avoid possible rejection. Officials may check for such things as:
    • Front and rear brakes operable
    • Tyres in reasonable condition
    • End plugs on handle bars
    • Loose head sets
    • At least one water bidon cage
    • Stripped cables
    • True wheels
  • Please  note  that  the  bike  check-in  is  a  safety  precaution  to  monitor  basic  soundness of your bike  and  is  essentially  a  visual  check  on  obvious defects. It is not  a  certification  of roadworthiness  by  Triathlon  Australia  Technical  Officials  that  your  bike  meets  any  specific minimum  criteria  or  a  guarantee  it  will  not  break  down  during  the  race.  It is your sole responsibility to ensure the mechanical and safe operation of your bike prior to and during the race.
  • All race numbers will be allocated a bike rack. Race numbers are allocated in Category order so you will be in a similar area to all other participants in your category. Participants are requested to rack only in the designated rack space for your race number and by handlebars.
  • All accessories and/or event requirements should be removed from the bike until Saturday morning, TWA takes no responsibility for lost or misplaced accessories. Bike saddles and computers can be covered in the event of bad weather. Disc wheels may be used on rear only. Your competitor bike number (issued at Registration) must be attached to seat post with the number visible from both sides. You must ensure it is secure and it must not be defaced or cut in anyway. You will be able to go to your bike on race morning to pump up your tyres, place your drink bidons and any other race gear you require.
  • The bike compound will be secure and monitored from the start of registration until 4.30pm on Saturday.

RACE DAY

You cannot remove your bike from transition on Race day for a cycle warm up.
 
Helmets: Triathlon Australia Technical Officials will carry out a visual inspection of your helmet at the time of your bike check-in and inspection. Your helmet, therefore, must be correctly fastened on your head at this time.    This  visual  inspection,  however,  as  with  the  bike  inspection,  is  not  a certification of roadworthiness.  You can keep your helmet with you until race morning.

Race Packs: At registration, you will receive a pack containing all requirements for the race.

  • Bike number: must be placed on your seat pillar with the numbers back to back behind the seat pillar so to be visible to all race officials during the event.
  • Timing band: is your responsibility, at bike check in and on race day, entrance to the transition area will be subject to participants having the timing band strapped to their right ankle.
  • Wrist ID: is your responsibility, at bike check in and on race day, entrance to the transition area will be subject to participants having the wrist ID securely fastened to the wrist. The Wrist ID is also your entry pass into the Meltdown Function post race at The Esplanade Hotel, opposite Transition area on Marine Terrace. Please do not remove the band after the race.
Race number: is mandatory for all participants. Individual participants must wear the race number on the bike and run legs, all team cyclists and runners must display this number
  • throughout their legs of the event. Participants are advised to purchase a race number belt prior to the event. This allows for the number to be worn on the participants back throughout the bike leg and moved to the front in the run leg as required. Safety Pins will be supplied at Registration for those participants without a race belt.
  • Bag Check tags: you will find 3 manila bag check tags in your race pack. These are for your use to mark your race number on and to attach to your bags prior to checking them in to the Security Bag compound adjacent to the transition area.

Expo: Event Sponsors and associated products will be on display at the Event expo located in the Registration and Expo Area adjacent to the Finish Line on Barnard Park.  Access is open to all spectators and family members throughout Friday 4 May and on Race Day.

Parking: Car parking will be available on race day at Barnard Park (opposite transition area) for the duration of the event. All participants arriving at transition on Race day will be directed to use Barnard Park. Please note that those spectators wishing to egress from the race site prior to closure of the Bike course at 12.30pm are asked to park elsewhere. Shire of Busselton have ensured TWA of enforcement of parking fines in all No Parking zones which includes street side parking on Marine Terrace and adjacent to Transition Area.
DO NOT PARK ON THE VERGE OF MARINE TERRACE, MILNE AND STANLEY STREETS.
YOU WILL BE BOOKED.

QUALIFICATION FOR IRONMAN AUSTRALIA
Completion of the Sunsmart Busselton Half Ironman Triathlon as an individual within the required time will make you eligible to enter the 2009 Ironman Australia event In Port Macquarie.

Prize Money
The following prize money will be awarded for the event for the top 5 Male and Female athletes who are racing in the Open Division only.

1st Place          $1,100
2nd Place           $500
3rd Place           $400
4th  Place           $300
5th Place            $200

* Please note that 4th and 5th placegetters need to finish in a time not greater than 10% slower of the first place getter to be eligible for prize money as per the Snap Ironman Half Triathlon Series rules.

Registration:

Bag check in:

A secure participant bag area will be available from 6.30am at the event village. No bags can be left in transition area during the event. Bags can be accessed immediately after the race when placed into the secure compound at the event village on Barnard Park.

Race Briefing:

AWAD Race briefing: 7.20 am at the swim start compound

 

Individuals and Teams: 7.40am on Beach

 

Remember Transition closes at 7.40am and access is not permitted after this time

Race Starts:

• AWAD 7.45am

 

• Open Category 8.00am

 

• Then approximately 4 age group and team wave starts to follow (times TBC)

Cut off times:

The following course cut off times will be enforced.

 

Swim course:

75 minutes (individuals)

 

60 minutes (teams)

Bike Course:

5 hours total race time - individual participants

 

4.25 hours total race time  - team cyclists

Race Course:

7.5 hours total race time - individual participants

 

6.75 hours total race time -  team runners

Finish information:

For  photographic  and  video  recording,  please  remember  to  keep  your  head  up  and  ensure  any headgear does not obscure your face when in the finish chute. Also ensure your race number is correctly positioned and displayed at the front on upper clothing.

Post Race:

Once you have been medically assessed and cleared following your finish, you have the choice of moving to the food/ drink or massage area.
Finishers Towels will be handed to competitors as they cross the finish line.
Event Merchandise is available to purchase through the Expo
Bags can be accessed at the bag Security area adjacent to the event village any time after the completion of your race.

Bike Collection:

Transition opens for Bike collection at 3.30pm and will remain secure until 4.30pm. At this time transition area will become unsecured and open. Bikes MUST be collected on Race Day. 

 

NOTE: You must be wearing your ID wristband to be able to collect your bike.
