IRONMAN 70.3 BUSSELTON 2012 

1 LAP SWIM / 2 LAP BIKE / 3 LAP RUN

This document is a overview of the event and all athletes are required to attend the COMPULSARY briefing. To register at the briefing simply bring along your race transponder which will be sensed by timing as present during the briefing at 5:30 pm on Friday the 4th  May 2012 .

Non attendance at the COMPULSARY RACE BRIEFING may result in a penalty OR FORFIT OF PLACING.

 SWIM COURSE: 1.9KM

There will be wave starts in the swim to reduce congestion amongst swimmers. All participants will be asked to know their start wave and tie and make their way to the swim start compound on the beach .

It is a one-lap swim course in alongside the historic Busselton Jetty. The swim starts in waist deep water on the east side of Busselton Jetty, the swim heads out to sea for 850m, followed by a right hand turn – swimming away from the jetty. A short straight at the top of the course by another right hand turn heading to head back to shore to the swim exit then into transition.

 Wetsuits

The Event Technical Delegate will take the water temperature 24 hours before race start and the reading will be displayed at Registration on Friday night. The water should be in the vicinity of 20 degrees Celsius in which case wetsuits will be PERMITTED. Wetsuits must only be removed and left at your numbered bike rack.

 BIKE COURSE: 90.1KM

Two lap bike course. The bike leg exits the transition area at the eastern end directly onto Milne Street, heading left. A right turn into Geographe Bay Road for approximately 3km. Cyclists will then follow Guerin Street across Marine Terrace to Layman Rd. A right hand turn into Layman Road, the course continues along Layman Road through the Wonnerup town site then a left turn onto Tuart Drive. The course continues along Tuart Drive for approximately 10km where they will complete a U-turn and retrace their route back to the Layman Rd roundabout, where it continues back along Layman Rd. A right turn at Carey Street back into town and then a left turn into Marine Terrace, followed by right into Milne Street, to complete lap 1 of 2.  At the end of lap 2 you will dismount, on the corner of Barnard Park.

 There will be toilet facilities along the course at both aid stations  course and the penalty box .

BIDON EXCHANGE

The will be two bidon Exchanges on the bike course. The first is on outward journey on Tuart Drive, approximately 200metres after the left hand turn from Layman Road. The second will be on the return journey on Layman Road just after the right hand turn from Tuart Drive. An area to discard your empty bidons will be set up prior to the each bidon exchange, on the left hand side of the road. The first one will be just prior to the corner of the left hand turn from Layman Road. The second will be prior to the right hand turn into Lyman The pick up will also be located on your left hand side. Please take extreme care of volunteers and fellow competitors at the Bidon Exchange.

If you are discarding and/or receiving a bidon, please slow down on approach and move to the left hand side of the road to allow other participants a clear course to pass on the right. Participants are reminded to slow down to ensure you secure the item you require. Participants are also reminded the Bidon exchange and all Aid Stations are manned by local volunteers who are generously donating their time.

During the Bike Course, please only discard empty bidons at the disposal area before you reach the bidon exchange to receive a full bidon. Competitors found discarding bidons on the course other than at the disposal area may receive a  penalty. Please note: there is no provision for the return of any personal bidons.

Triathlon WA will be providing all competitors with recyclable/eco-friendly bidons at the event. We are encouraging all competitors to become more conscious of the type of bidons they purchase on an ongoing basis and as such bring along to the event. As most athlete dispose of at least 2 of their own bidons at the event, we could encourage that these all to be recyclable/eco-friendly bidons.

Over time and through active awareness strategies, we aim to have all bidons disposed of at the event eco-friendly by 2013.

Drinks will be dispersed in the following order – please ensure you slow down and call what your want loudly and clearly.

                             

PENALTY BOX

The Penalty box will be placed near the end of the cycle lap. The time penalty MUST be served on the lap in which the penalty notice was received. Failure to stop at the Penalty Box or on the lap in which the penalty occurred, will result in automatic disqualification without any right of appeal..

PENALTY BOX BEHAVIOUR

 Athletes must follow instructions of technical officials when in the penalty box. Public toilet ( including accidental) littering , spitting or discarding clothing is a Red Card violation and will be addressed by the RR as such. Dialogue with the Technical officials may disrupt the working of the area and must be limited, polite and pertaining to the event. Athletes must stay astride the cycle during the penalty, Toilet leave is allowed however the penalty time will start on your return to the back of the line

 RUN COURSE: 21.1KM

Participants will exit transition through the south west corner and make their way out onto Geographe Bay Rd. Heading left initially participants will round the Scout Hall just north of the Goose Café and head back past the transition area along the walking path. All participants run out on the pathway to a turn point past the Guerin Street/ Geographe Bay Road intersection. Then return along the roadway to the transition area.

At the completion of the first and second laps participants remain on the road and pass the Finish Chute back to transition and loop around the scout hall back onto the path. At the completion of the third lap, participants veer to the left side of Geographe Bay Road and into the Finish Chute at the northern corner of Barnard Park.

 AID STATIONS

There will be four (4) Aid Stations situated on the run course.

  • The first Aid Station will be located directly adjacent to transition on the road.
  • The second Aid Station will be located approximately half way along the run course.
  • The third will be located at the run turnaround.
  • The fourth will be opposite the second Aid Station but positioned on the roadside rather than the footpath.

All Aid Stations will be single sided except Aid Station 3 (which is double sided) and will supply the following:

  • Water
  • Cola
  • Hydration product
  • Powerbar Gel blasts
  • Cookies

RUBBISH ON COURSE

Triathlon WA is endeavouring to make the Busselton Festival of Triathlon a “green event” and as such will be following key principles in ensuring that recycling is achieved at this event. Please be conscious of all recycling bins and discard all waste in the correct recycling bins.

Please be considerate of the local environment and refrain from discarding any waste,  on the Course.   This request applies for empty bidons which should not, under any circumstance, be discarded other than at the Bidon discard and exchange area and as mentioned earlier,. There is provision in the rules penalty for any indiscretions.

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA RACE COMPETITION RULES

 This event is run in accordance with the Triathlon Australia Race Competition Rules http://www.triathlon.org.au/officiating/rules . Additional special rules will apply as per the WTC 70.3 IRONMAN guidelines.

All athletes are expected to be familiar with the TARCR and WTCASR. If you have any queries regarding any aspect of competing or any of the rules you should discuss with Technical Officials at registration on Friday afternoon.

The specific rules for all sectors which will be enforced at this event will be explained at the COMPULSARY briefing.

Technical Officials will be POSITIONED throughout the course including the transition area, on motorcycles on the bike course and also on the run course to ensure all race rules are observed. The Technical Official will advise the competitor of the reason for any penalty or infringement issued. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure they can hear and  understand what the penalty or infringement is for and what the nature of the penalty is.

MEDICAL

Medical assistance will be available on the Course. Please ask for medical help if you have even the slightest hint you may need it. Please note – if you are transported by ambulance you could be required to meet costs involved unless you are covered by an appropriate fund. Any aid given by race medical personnel is permissible and will not lead to disqualification. However, if you receive any outside assistance you will be disqualified.

You will NOT be penalised for receiving medical evaluation on the Course. You will be withdrawn from the race only if deemed necessary by medical personnel. Their decision is FINAL

Competitors who indicated on the entry application specific medical conditions will be listed to facilitate treatment by our medical staff and ambulances on the Course.

MEDICAL / FITNESS WAIVER

As a competitor, you have accepted the Conditions of Entry and Event Waiver. Please note this is a legal part of the form and affects your rights and it is important that you are aware and understand all sections. As part of your entry, you have attested that your physical condition has been verified by a registered medical practitioner. If you have developed a medical condition since you registered to enter IRONMAN 70.3 BUSSELTON, then please notify the Triathlon WA team on busselton70.3@ironman.com  and where appropriate, provide a medical certificate.

ATHLETE RECOVERY

At the completion of the event muffins, fruit, water and Electrolyte drink will be available for all participants in the Athlete Recovery Area. Participants are also reminded that massage is available after the race with the RECOVERY AREA providing up to 8 massage therapists on race day.

RACE RESULTS

Official Results will be available to download on the event website within 12hrs post race.

QUALIFYING FOR THE 2012 IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 70.3

 Twenty-five (25) qualifying slots for the 2012 Ironman World Championship 70.3  in Lake Las Vegas, Henderson, Nevada) will be awarded to the top age group finishers. Final slot allocation will be determined on race day based on the number of official starters.

 Athletes MUST claim their slot in person on Sunday,6th May from 10am at the event function Marquee on Barnard Park. Be prepared to pay the USD entry fee with credit card or cheque only; no cash (a $25.00 USD processing fee will be added to credit card charges; Discover cards are NOT accepted).
